Exploring FamilySearch’s Improve Place Names Tool

Back in May, I did a blog post describing my approach to how I document place names in my family tree. I shared that I follow the conventions used by FamilySearch – primarily, to follow the format of (town/city) + (county) + (state) + (country). You can find that post here.

I have been doing this for years now and I was so delighted when a genea-friend of mine recently brought to my attention that FamilySearch now has a volunteer opportunity for us all to crowd-source and help standardize the place names used in the FamilySearch Family Tree!!

I am over the moon about this tool!

Not only is it easy to use, but batches are limited to 10 at a time in order to avoid getting overwhelmed. I can work through a set in just minutes and feel like I have made a true contribution to helping improve the backend of FamilySearch’s ability help match the people we are researching, to records about them.

Check out my video giving an overview!

Have you tried it? Let me know! You can either leave a comment here on the blog post or come join my FB group, the Academy of Legacy Leaders – a learning and inspiration community for those that enjoy sharing and preserving their family legacies.
