    • Robert Edward Clay was born on June 20, 1875, in Bristol, Virginia, the son of Frances and Harry. He married Obelia M. Goins in 1929. They had one child during their marriage. He was a pioneer educator of African American schools in Tennessee and a colleague of Booker T. Washington. He was appointed as the Rosenwald Tennessee school agent in 1917 and became the state developer of Negro education in 1937; retiring in December of 1955. He died on June 23, 1961, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 86, and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery.
