During the 20-year career, William attained the rank of Seargeant First Class and upon discharge was a decorated veteran. His miliary service included a combat tour in Korea during the Korean Conflict and two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded the Purple Heart for combat injuries sustained in Korea, was given the Good Conduct medal signifying valor and loyalty on three occasions, and was commended for his outstanding skill in a number of areas including marksman."
