RALEIGH - Joel Franklin Mahler, DVM, of Raleigh, died December 17, 2002, after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Mahler received a B.A. degree from the University of Virginia in 1973, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) degree from the Univ. of Georgia in 1977. He practiced Veterinary Medicine for three years in Richmond, Virginia and then began a career in research. He trained in Veterinary Pathology at North Carolina State University, becoming the school's first resident. He became board certified and a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 1986. Dr. Mahler worked with the National Toxicology Program within the National Institute of Environmental health in Research Triangle Park, NC. He was involved in research directed towards cancer, co-authoring over 50 publications in scientific journals and numerous book chapters, as well a serving as a section editor for the journal Toxicologic Pathology. He was a nationally recognized expert in pathology of genetically modified animals used in cancer research. He served as an expert consultant for scientific bodies such as International Life Sciences Institute, International Agency for Research in Cancer and the World Health Organization, and has received multiple awards for his scientific accomplishments.
He is survived by wife Beth W. Mahler and his stepson, Charlie Gaul. He was the beloved son of George and Lorene Mahler and brother of Carl Mahler and his wife, Wanda, all of Richmond, Virginia. Joel was a kind, giving and caring person who will be missed by friends and relatives.
A memorial service is planned for Friday, December 20, 2002 at North Raleigh Funeral Home located at 7615 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, NC at 2:00pm.
