Text This file describes the notification, subsequent detainment, and capture after escape, of Gosh Loy Ehlers in Ireland. On February 17, 1915, an officer from the British Consulate in Portland, Oregon, sent at a letter to the State of Foreign Affairs in London to notify them that Gosch Loy shipped as a sailor on the Norwegian Barque “Karmo” at Astoria. Gosch Loy gave his nationality as Danish, was aged 24 and described as “very tall, freckled face and reddish hair,” but noted that the Captain of the ship through they were German. Thus, notice was being sent in advance of the ship’s arrival in Dublin, Ireland. When the ship arrived in Dublin in June 1915, he was arrested, detained and admitted he was German. He was detained and sent to the Prisoner of War Camp at Oldcastle in County Meath.
