Text Spoke with Haywood on the phone today. These are the tidbits on the family that I learned:

•Haywood’s grandfather, Samuel was a slave and never worked in the fields, he was a house slave. Samuel came to NC from somewhere in Georgia.
    • His grandmother, Mary, died two weeks before he was born. His mother, Pearlie Mae, didn’t go to the funeral b/c back then, it was bad for a pregnant woman to go to a funeral b/c they believed the baby would be “marked” somehow.

•Phelton was Haywood’s aunt. She died very young, somewhere around 5-7 years old from what Haywood believes was Typhoid Fever.

•Haywood’s uncle Wright was married to a woman younger than he. His wife died about 20 years ago. Wright was living in Cheraw, SC when he died. Haywood believes that Carol Jean has a picture of his wife and that Grandma Cora had a picture of Wright himself in his preacher’s collar.
