Excerpt from obituary: Taneytown, MD -- Sylvia Farrell Alderson of Taneytown, Maryland, formerly of Nashville, Tennessee, died peacefully on November 14, 2017. She was 87.
Born September 3, 1930, in High Point, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Robert Paul Farrell and Nellie Thomasson Farrell. Her family moved to Nashville, where Sylvia lived for over forty years, raising three children with her husband, Bill Alderson Jr. They were active members of Belle Meade United Methodist Church, and Sylvia volunteered many hours at the Sam Davis Memorial Association, Cheekwood Fine Arts Center, and Belle Meade Mansion.
Sylvia graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1954 with a BS in Nursing and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. In 1976 she earned a Master's in Nursing, also in Vanderbilt, and worked as a psychiatric nurse in Tennessee, Delaware, and New York.
In 1986, Sylvia and Bill moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A life-long artist, Sylva was actively involved in the arts there, volunteering with various art and music organizations. In 2009, she moved to Maryland to be closer to family.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, William Thomas Alderson Jr., and her brother, Robert Paul Farrell Jr. A memorial service was held on Sunday, November 19, and Sylvia was laid to rest in Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. {see the obituary for further details}. |
