12 Years Later – A Video Preserved

Today is the culmination of the American Library Association’s National Preservation Week, a week dedicated to ensuring that institutions and individuals are aware of the importance of preserving our items.

Seeing to it that my own personal and family items are preserved is a priority for me and I could definitely benefit from more diligence at times. For example, today, I finally archived a video that I’ve had in my possession for 12 years, but had not organized and preserved in my online digital collection.

The video is one of my great-uncle, Fred McNair. The video is of the church service which includes him preaching the last sermon he delivered before he passed away in 2008. I never met Uncle Fred, though have heard so many stories about him. He was my maternal grandmother’s brother (one of her 4 brothers). Though I never met him, I did meet his wife and children on the day of his funeral – I’d just happened to be in Chicago for a work trip and was able to go visit the family and meet them all.

Here is an excerpt from the video:

I enjoy hearing his voice and seeing him in the video. And, I am glad I have now archived this in my online collection at Forever.com so that my family will have access to it for years to come.  The anniversary of his death is approaching and in my own way, this is a small tribute to his memory.

What have you preserved for your own family lately?
